1. Use the Time Blocking Method
Rather than vague to-do lists, assign specific time slots for each task, marking these in a digital calendar to block out study time (ie 4-6pm chemistry review), assignment deadlines (set pre-deadlines), breaks and free time, social and networking events. This keeps you accountable and prevents last-minute cramming.
2. Pomodoro Technique for Focus
Avoid burnout and painful long study sessions by using the Pomodoro Technique. The Pomodoro Technique improves focus by breaking work into 25-minute intervals (Pomodoros) followed by a 5-minute break. After four Pomodoros, take a longer break (15-30 minutes). This keeps your mind fresh and prevents procrastination.
3. Prioritise with the 2-Minute Rule
Not everything on your to-do list is equally important. Apply this simple rule: if a task takes less than 2 minutes (eg replying to an email), do it immediately. For bigger tasks, ask “will this help me reach my goals?”. If not, postpone or drop it. This enables you to clear small tasks and focus on what truly matters.
Remember to review your schedule and adjust this weekly to allow flexibility – key to long term success. Learn to say “no” to non-essential or non-urgent commitments to ensure you can focus on your academics and university applications. Know that FOMO only lasts a short while, whereas achieving your university goals will last a lifetime. Finally, ensure you have downtime to prioritise your mental health!
